Just make everyday count
Jul 31, 2024My favourite Aunt passed away a few days ago. She was 80 (a good age) and got to celebrate her 60th wedding anniversary the day before she passed.
It was completely unexpected for all of us - she had some nausea and low blood pressure the week before - and in retrospect we suspect she felt alot worse - but in her “get on with life” style didn’t want to trouble anyone. She passed away in her sleep from a heart attack.
Tomorrow is her funeral (very low key, in the backyard which she loved)- and as I prepare a few words to say, I am overwhelmed with all of the beautiful memories.
My sisters and I all wanted to be like Aunty Lyn! Having no children of her own - we were her kids. She was that favourite, crazy Aunt that made you feel so special and seen, and had you in fits of laughter. All the time.
She taught us how to:
- strut at the beach (stomache in girls!)
- to always kiss the boys - even if you are not sure if you will go on a second date (because maybe they kiss better than they look!)
- to find the quirky, crazy, funny side of life in the everyday (she would say if you can’t laugh - it’s all over!)
Years later we all discovered that we had each had out first (and last) smoke with her cigarettes!
She was always in our lives - even when they moved to Harvey Bay. My childhood memories are sprinkled with her. I spoke with her the day before she passed - and even then she was cracking jokes. I am so grateful that I got to say “I love you too Auntie Lyn”
Tomorrow we are celebrating her life, her love, her essence. It will be happy, funny, sad and heart breaking - and everything in between.
You never know when it’s a “last day”. Like Aunty Lyn - keep laughing. Be fabulous. Tell the people you love how much they mean to you. Do your best - learn from mistakes.
Just make everyday count.
