Midlife Meaning

personal growth Apr 13, 2023

This week I had a mentoring session with a brilliant 60 year old woman who has been a data scientist for 40 years!

Her opening sentence was “this session is probably more valuable for someone younger with potential. But my manager signed me up so I hope I don’t waste your time.”

The way she then told me her story (rather than the story itself) is what broke my heart.

Here was this incredible, hugely talented woman.

Who felt in the workplace old and done.

No longer with growth potential.

She was hoping to contribute “crumbs” while she still could (her words).

After hearing her story and feeling her pain, I did one thing only.

I retold her story from my eyes.

How rather than old, I saw a leader with unrivalled knowledge and experience.

Who understood not just “the latest” but the rich end to end evolution of data science

And who was now at the peak of her contribution. Due to her deep experience, resilience and commitment.

By the end she had tears in her eyes. She couldn’t speak. But she looked me in the eyes and quietly said just one word.

Thank you.

Negative self talk is hidden and insidious. It makes us small. It leads us to give up.

I know she liked my version of her story better. It was authentic and true. I really hope she now believes it.
