Why is control an illusion?
Feb 15, 2024Humans have a built-in need for control. It's coded into our brains and our nervous system. Control means we are safe, we are not going to be tossed around and battered on the rocks of life, and we can put in place the guard rails that will protect us from those dreaded, difficult downsides.
But regardless of what we do, it still happens. When that first real curve ball hits, we are suddenly aware that control was an illusion all along.
We may ask ourselves questions like...
-How did my life turn upside down in 24 hours?
- What did I do to deserve this?
- Why did I ever sweat the small stuff?
That's when we realise that control is an illusion (we only FELT like we had control, but we never really did), and our actual life challenge is navigating between extreme trials and extreme triumphs; and everything in between.
To learn from it. To appreciate it (eventually?). And to grow from it (definitely!)
This is the essence of Uncomfortable Growth. It's about you, and where you are in your journey. It's about how to understand your own experiences, your subconscious triggers, and how you can "hack" yourself to behave differently. Combining psychology, neuroscience and sociology, it's learning how to choose what you want to become, rather than reacting to what is in front.
It's about creating the life you want, regardless of what happens.
You can't control the waves and the rocks, but you can steer the ship. If you learn how.
